Who We Are
Our trust is named in memory of Late Mr Ali Hasan Mangi, for whom poverty and deprivation were deeply personal.
Who we are
Mr Ali Hasan Mangi was born in 1913 to Muhammad Ibrahim Mangi in Rato Dero, a small town near Larkana in Pakistan’s southern province of Sindh. He lost his parents early and grew up with very little.
He became a teacher, a social activist and a businessman. Whatever he had, he gave away — scholarships for students, food for families who had run out, a roof for people with nowhere to sleep. During the 1947 partition he helped establish refugee camps. Later he worked to bring industry, jobs and infrastructure to his community.
He entered politics as an advocate for the poor, campaigning to secure basic services for people who had been overlooked, and played a part in the formation of the Sindh Regiment.
He died in 1994, remembered above all for a kindness he never made conditional. The Trust exists to continue that work — a standing tribute to a man whose measure of a life was what it did for other people.

We work towards a country where no one is left behind, and where every person has access to the tools and opportunities needed to live a full and meaningful life — exactly as Mr Ali Hasan Mangi envisioned through his lifelong commitment to the underserved.
Lasting change comes only when compassion, selflessness and collective effort drive the upliftment of the most vulnerable among us.

To empower the underprivileged through education, healthcare, employment and social development.
The Trust works to uplift communities and provide the resources that make progress possible — sustainably, and at a pace communities themselves set.
In doing so we intend that his spirit of compassion and generosity outlasts all of us, and endures for generations.
Our numbers speak
We started working in Village Khairo Dero in 2008 and have since continued to expand to other communities and districts in Sindh.

Naween Mangi is a journalist, media trainer and community developer. She founded the Ali Hasan Mangi Memorial Trust in 2008 in memory of her maternal grandfather.
She began her career as a business journalist more than twenty years ago and spent the latter half of that period as Pakistan bureau chief of Bloomberg News. Before that she wrote for Forbes Magazine in New York, the Asia Times in Bangkok, and The Friday Times, The Daily Times, Herald, Newsline and Dawn in Pakistan.
She grew up in Karachi and has lived and worked in London and New York. She holds an economics degree from the London School of Economics and a master’s in business journalism from New York University, with further training in Singapore, New Delhi and Tokyo.
A decade of covering companies, markets and the economy took her to dozens of villages across Sindh, reporting on farming and desert communities. She was proud of the work — and deeply disturbed by the conditions she was documenting. The Trust was her answer to that.
She divides her time between Karachi and Khairo Dero, from where she runs the organisation.
